The 1985/86 season marked Real Sporting de Gijón's 24th campaign in the top flight of Spanish football, their 11th consecutive season following promotion to LaLiga Santander. The 1980s were a golden era for the club. Despite the departure of key players, Sporting remained one of the leading clubs in Spain, regularly competing in European competitions.
