The 1985/86 season marked Real Sporting de Gijón's 24th campaign in the top flight of Spanish football, their 11th consecutive season following promotion to LaLiga Santander. The 1980s were a golden era for the club. Despite the departure of key players, Sporting remained one of the leading clubs in Spain, regularly competing in European competitions. The late 1980s and early 1990s saw the emergence of a new generation of talented youth players.
